If you run a service business in Texas, Google Maps is not a side channel. For a lot of searches, it is the whole ballgame. A homeowner needs an AC repair in Austin. A family in Frisco needs a plumber. A business owner in San Antonio needs a commercial electrician. They search, scan the map pack, read a few reviews, and call.

The good news is that most local competitors still treat their Google Business Profile like a one-time setup task. They filled it out once, added a logo, and hoped Google would figure out the rest. That leaves room for a serious service business to win.

Start with the basics, but do them completely

Your profile needs the right primary category, accurate services, real photos, service areas, business hours, and a description that sounds like a human wrote it. Not stuffed with keywords. Not vague. Just clear.

If you are an HVAC company in Dallas, say what you actually handle: AC repair, system replacement, tune-ups, ductwork, indoor air quality, and emergency service. If you serve Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Richardson, list those areas only if you truly work there. Google is looking for consistency, and customers are looking for confidence.

Reviews are not just stars

Five stars help, but the words inside the reviews matter too. A review that says "Great job" is nice. A review that says "They replaced our AC in Round Rock before the weekend and explained every option clearly" is much more useful.

Ask customers to be specific. Do not script them. Do not pressure them. Just give them a little guidance: what service did we help with, what city were you in, and what made the experience good? That kind of review helps future customers and gives Google more context.

Your website has to support the map listing

A strong Google Business Profile can only carry you so far if the website behind it is thin. Your website should confirm what the profile says. Same services. Same areas. Same phone number. Same business name. Same basic story.

This is where local city pages matter. A general Texas page is not enough. A page for Dallas service businesses should talk about DFW. A page for Austin service businesses should understand Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and the Hill Country edge. A page for San Antonio service businesses should speak to the military, tourism, and north-side growth patterns that shape the market.

Service-area pages should be helpful, not repetitive

The trap is easy to spot. A business creates 20 pages that all say the same thing, swaps the city name, and calls it local SEO. That does not help a customer, and it does not build much trust.

A useful local page answers real questions. Who do you help in this market? What services are most common here? Which neighborhoods or suburbs matter? What should a customer know before calling? What proof do you have that you understand the area?

Use posts and photos to stay active

Google Business Profile posts will not save a weak strategy, but they are a good habit. Share seasonal reminders, project photos, service notes, and simple updates. If you are a Waco roofer, post before storm season. If you are an Austin HVAC company, post before the first major heat wave. If you are a San Antonio plumber, show the kinds of jobs you handle in older homes and newer suburbs.

Photos are even more important. Real trucks, real team members, real job sites, real finished work. Stock photos do not build local trust.

Texas markets need different plans

Dallas is wide and competitive. Austin is research-heavy and fast-moving. San Antonio has military families, tourism, and long-time homeowners. Waco has a tighter community feel with Baylor and tourism shaping demand. Houston is its own giant local search universe.

The basics are the same, but the strategy should not be. Good local SEO respects the market.

Open your Google Business Profile and check the simple things first: categories, services, photos, service areas, hours, phone number, website link, and recent reviews. Then look at your website. Does it clearly support the places and services you want to rank for?
